Skin Cancer Screening in Germantown, MD
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and it is highly treatable when found early. A professional skin exam with a board certified dermatologist is one of the best ways to catch changes before they become serious. At Divergent Dermatology, Dr. Qaren Quartey provides thorough, unhurried skin checks in a comfortable setting.
Who should get a skin check?
Anyone can develop skin cancer, regardless of age or skin tone. You may especially benefit from a screening if you:
Have a new, changing, or unusual mole or spot
Have a personal or family history of skin cancer or melanoma
Have many moles, or moles that look unusual
Have a history of significant sun exposure, sunburns, or tanning bed use
Have fair skin, light eyes, or red or blond hair
Have a weakened immune system or take immunosuppressive medication
Notice a sore that won't heal, or a spot that bleeds, itches, or crusts
Darker skin tones are not immune. Skin cancer is often diagnosed later in people with skin of color, when it is harder to treat. It can also appear in less sun-exposed areas, such as the palms, soles, nails, and mucous membranes. Dr. Quartey's training includes care for patients of all skin tones.
What to look for at home: the ABCDEs
Between visits, check your skin regularly and note any spot that shows:
Asymmetry: one half doesn't match the other
Border: edges that are irregular, ragged, or blurred
Color: uneven shades of brown, black, red, white, or blue
Diameter: larger than about 6 mm (a pencil eraser), though melanomas can be smaller
Evolving: any change in size, shape, color, or symptoms such as itching or bleeding
If you notice any of these, don't wait for your next routine visit. Schedule an appointment.
What to expect at your visit
A brief history. We'll ask about your personal and family history, sun exposure, and any spots that concern you.
A head-to-toe skin exam. Dr. Quartey will examine your skin, including areas people often forget, such as the scalp, between the toes, and the backs of the legs. You'll be given a gown and your privacy is respected throughout.
A closer look at suspicious spots. If something looks concerning, Dr. Quartey may examine it more closely with a dermatoscope, a handheld magnifying tool.
A biopsy if needed. If a spot needs testing, a small sample can often be taken during your visit with local numbing. It is sent to a laboratory for evaluation.
A plan. We'll explain our findings, recommend a follow-up schedule, and discuss treatment or referral (e.g. Mohs surgery) if needed.
A full exam usually takes about 15-20 minutes. It's helpful to remove nail polish and arrive with your hair down so we can examine your nails and scalp.
Other conditions we evaluate and treat
Skin checks can also identify precancerous growths such as actinic keratoses, as well as benign growths, birthmarks, and moles that may be bothering you.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I have a skin check?
It depends on your risk. Many people benefit from a yearly exam, and some need more frequent visits. Dr. Quartey will recommend a schedule based on your history.
Is a skin cancer screening painful?
No. A visual exam is painless. If a biopsy is needed, the area is numbed first, and most patients tolerate it well.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed for most insurance plans. Please check with your insurer.
Does insurance cover skin cancer screening?
Coverage depends on your plan and your symptoms. Please call 240-813-8215 to confirm your coverage before your visit.
Are you accepting new patients?
Yes, we're currently accepting new patients.
