What is eczema?
Eczema (also called atopic dermatitis) is a common, chronic skin condition in which the skin barrier doesn't hold moisture well and becomes easily irritated. It tends to come and go, with flares followed by calmer periods. Eczema isn't contagious.
Common signs include:
Intense itching, often worse at night
Dry, rough, or scaly patches
Redness, swelling, or darkened skin
Small bumps that may ooze or crust when scratched
Thickened skin from repeated scratching
Eczema looks different on different skin tones. On lighter skin it often appears red or pink. On darker skin it may look brown, purple, gray, or ashen, and it can be harder to recognize or can leave lasting dark or light patches after a flare. Dr. Quartey is experienced in recognizing eczema on all skin tones.

How we approach treatment
There is no one-size-fits-all plan. After examining your skin and discussing your history, Dr. Quartey may recommend a combination of:
Skin care basics: gentle cleansers and moisturizing routines that support the skin barrier
Trigger identification: finding and reducing irritants, allergens, and lifestyle factors that set off flares
Prescription topical treatments: anti-inflammatory creams and ointments, including steroid and non-steroid options
Advanced therapies: for moderate to severe eczema that doesn't respond to topical treatment, options may include oral medications, injectable biologic medications, or referral for light therapy.
Treatment of infection: eczema-damaged skin can become infected and may need specific treatment
Ongoing follow-up: adjusting your plan as your skin changes
What to expect at your visit
A conversation. We'll ask about your symptoms, flare patterns, sleep, work or school, products you use, and family history of eczema, asthma, or allergies.
A skin exam. Dr. Quartey will examine your skin and may test for infection or other causes if needed.
A plan you can follow. We'll explain each step, including how to apply treatments and what improvement to expect.
Follow-up. Eczema is a long-term condition, and regular check-ins help keep flares under control.
Helpful to bring: a list of the creams, soaps, laundry products, and medications you currently use, and photos of flares if your skin looks different on the day of your visit.
Frequently asked questions
Can eczema be cured?
There is currently no cure, but most people can achieve good control with the right treatment and routine. Many have long stretches with few or no symptoms.
Is eczema caused by an allergy?
Allergies can play a role for some people, but eczema is mainly related to skin barrier function and immune system activity. Identifying triggers can help, and Dr. Quartey can advise on whether further testing is appropriate.
Is it safe to use steroid creams?
When used as directed under a doctor's guidance, topical steroids are safe and effective for most people. We'll tell you which strength to use, where, and for how long, and discuss alternatives where appropriate.
